Cultural Consulting

As an artist myself, I understand that creating while keeping the audience’s perception in mind can be incredibly stifling. Nevertheless, it’s our responsibility as artists to make informed and aware content that respects the humanity of those our art portrays. My role as a cultural consultant is to help you maintain both artistic and social integrity. 

My guidance is supported by my degree in Cultural Studies, which trained me to identify socio-political implications in objects of culture—specifically in media and entertainment. My vast knowledge of cultural and media theory supports me in identifying what your lane is as a creative, and how you can make the art you seek to within it. Not only does making art rooted in your perspective show respect for people, but it also strengthens your work. We create our most powerful art when we embrace our own subjectivity as artists. 

That being said, we can’t avoid that art, more often than not, requires that we portray the world beyond ourselves. Because my Cultural Studies practice is rooted in a commitment to transformative justice, I instinctively pinpoint areas of concern on the grounds of fair representation. Together, with my foundation of cultural theory, we can explore morally- and ethically-aligned ways to tell the story your work aims to. This might look like adjusting the execution of your art, sourcing the perspective of those you may be representing to ensure your work is grounded in truth, or simply helping you to root further into your perspective. 

Our subjectivity affords all of us certain insights and certain blind spots. For that reason, this offering is beneficial for any and all creatives. That being said, creative fields, especially where power lies, are still dominated by whiteness, masculinity, and wealth. I particularly encourage those who identify with any of the aforementioned to take advantage of this service.

We’ll schedule a free remote consultation to assess what the project calls for, after which I will send a proposal of what our collaboration might look like—understanding that our approach may evolve as our understanding of the project does.

Rates vary greatly depending on the scope of the project. I will determine a rate based on our consultation and include it in my proposal, after which, if need be, we can negotiate a rate and degree of service that works for both of us.
